Gas Monkey Garage
A lifelong car enthusiast, Richard Rawlings purchased his first car at the young age of fourteen.
His love of working on cars with his father during his early years led him to launch the Gas Monkey Garage in 2002.
Located in Dallas, Texas, Rawlings’ shop initially focused on customizing classics and hot rods for domestic and international car aficionados.
But opening Gas Monkey Garage was only the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.
Rawlings also opened the Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill and Gas Monkey Live in Texas.
And in 2012, he became the star of Fast N’ Loud on the Discovery Channel, which featured his shop and crew.
Fast N’ Loud’s Cancelation
To the dismay of fans worldwide, Fast N’ Loud’s last episode aired on June 8th, 2020.
Neither Rawlings nor the Discovery Channel addressed the reason why the show was not returning to the network.
However, on December 15, 2020, Rawlings was a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where the host immediately inquired about the cancellation of the show.
Although Rawlings was prohibited from speaking negatively about the network that gave him his stardom, he did say he wanted more creative freedom than what his contract allowed.
He dreamed of starting an automotive podcast, something that was missing in the automotive industry.
Faced with the chaos and uncertainty that was 2020, Rawlings took the time for introspection and decided what he truly wanted to do.
Parting ways with the Discovery Channel, Rawlings was now a free agent, unrestricted from following his creativity.
Is Gas Monkey Garage Still in Business?
Once stuck creatively, Rawlings now focuses on his first love, customizing and restoring classics and hot rods at Gas Monkey Garage.
He documents the shop’s day-to-day activities on his Gas Monkey Garage YouTube channel.
With over 1.5 million subscribers, Rawlings may not be involved with any traditional media networks, but he has made a massive name for himself in the automotive entertainment industry.
On the shop’s website, you can purchase merchandise, book a tour, and even view the shop’s exterior through their live cam!
Since the show’s cancellation, Gas Monkey Garage has been active and remains active on all social media platforms.
In a 2024 Facebook post, Rawlings celebrated Gas Monkey Garage’s 20th anniversary and said they were “ready to put the metal to the metal in ‘25.”
In another Facebook post at the beginning of 2025, he said, “We’ve made it our mission in 2025 to buy even more classics this year. Our first find? A rust-free Model A from California!”
It appears Gas Monkey Garage is still in business and still has a lot more life left to live beyond 2025.
